What is Mobius?Mobius is an immersive multiplayer game concept that is designed to envelop audiences in both the real and virtual worlds. A Mobius game engages the audience as they work through puzzles, mysteries and intrigues of the narrative and provides an interactive 'always on' environment that can expand on an existing premise such as a successful, ongoing television series or tell a whole new story all on its own. Mobius provides television producers and content developers intriguing avenues through which to reach their audiences. The pervasive nature of the system and the interactive storytelling format draws the audience into an entertaining and addictive range of challenges. Once the stuff of science fiction in films such as The Game, the convergence of telecoms, IT and the media has made such games not just possible, but inevitable. Along with engaging a wide audience, Mobius can give broadcasters, sponsors and advertisers the ability to immerse their audiences in their products, ideas, brands and technologies.
How does it work?Players enter the game-space either through explicit invitations or, even better, through seemingly leaked or misplaced information. Typically, a Mobius game begins with a ruse or simple offer for involvement to a broad audience, and then draws the audience into an alternate world that exposes them to an immersive and pervasive game shrouded in mystery and challenge.
Game Play as NarrativeA Mobius game challenges players to not only explore the extent of the scenario, but also to advance the narrative through their contributions. In essence, players can effect the development of the game and their involvement is essential to the success of Mobius. The more players there are, the more challenging the Mobius world becomes. Characters are players and players are characters in this space and the real curiosity becomes a question of who is who and... why!
Levels of InvolvementMobius Games are designed with an appreciation for varied levels of engagement, allowing players to delve deep into the game world or merely enjoy the surface that extends to an already understood set of characters and situations. The alternate reality that draws players deeper into the story requires a commitment to understanding both the relationships between the elements in that world and the shifting reality of its storytelling. Layering the difficulty and demands of the gameplay allows Mobius to engage a wider audience, from the dilettante to the fanatic.
Game SystemsMobius Games systems are built on a series of technologies and techniques. While the primary means for game transmission is via the Internet, a true Mobius Game would include real-life locations and events, real people, false characters, mass media outlets, small shops, text messaging, email, street posters and even graffiti. Clues and progress are communicated either through central websites, email, phone messages or all of the above. The deeper the players become immersed in the game, the more information they can potentially uncover, increasing their odds of success. A Mobius Game can be insidious: a topical ruse that yet insinuates itself into the spirit of a community of players caught up in the intrigue of a truly interactive, pervasive gaming experience within which their actions have an impact on advancing the story to a climax and resolution. |
